Artist Biography:
Holtquist is an American sculptor with an oriental art education. When working overseas, he was introduced to Ikebana, the ancient Japanese art of floral composition. "Of all the new cultural experiences that I gained during my stay in Tokyo, I was most fascinated to learn that the rank of a samurai warrior was determined in part by his ability to make a beautiful flower arrangement before battle."

Greatly influenced by this philosophical tradition combining beauty and force, Holtquist incorporates the principles of Ikebana in his sculptures of marble, granite, bronze, and wood. With his oriental art training Holtquist creates a unique tension of line, equilibrium, and movement that sets his sculptures apart and defines his artistic style.

Born in rural western Minnesota, Holtquist is active in the US and Pietrasanta (Lucca), Italy. His works are in foundations and an institute in the United States; in private collections in Europe, Japan, Canada, and the US; and, in two European museums.
